Antipsychotic Medication

Stabilizing the brain chemistry that underlies psychosis.

Antipsychotic medications are a cornerstone of treatment for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and treatment-resistant conditions. At Integrative Psych, our Columbia-trained psychiatrists prescribe and monitor antipsychotics with close attention to efficacy, tolerability, and metabolic health — because the right medication, at the right dose, makes an enormous difference.

Questions

Frequently asked.

What conditions are treated with antipsychotic medications?+

Antipsychotics are used for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, treatment-resistant depression, and to manage acute psychosis from any cause. Some are also FDA-approved as adjuncts for major depression.

Are antipsychotics safe long-term?+

With proper monitoring, many patients take antipsychotics safely for years. We conduct regular metabolic monitoring (labs, weight, blood pressure) and adjust treatment if side effects emerge. The risks of untreated psychosis typically exceed the risks of monitored medication.

What is a long-acting injectable antipsychotic?+

LAIs are antipsychotic formulations given by injection every 2–4 weeks instead of daily pills. They improve adherence and reduce relapse risk. We discuss whether an LAI is appropriate based on your history and preferences.

Do you prescribe clozapine?+

Yes. Clozapine is the gold standard for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Our team is experienced with the REMS monitoring program required for clozapine prescribing.
